This is a beginner’s workshop for those who want to learn about the theory and practice of permaculture design and how to develop a fruit tree guild.
Join Estelle Drisdelle to discuss site and plant selection in designing your fruit tree guild to it’s best advantage.
Permaculture is all about slow observation and planning, so what better time than the fall to design your spring fruit tree guild. This is the third of a series of workshops on permaculture offered at La Solitude de Pré-d’en-Haut, Memramcook.
Usually we think of a guild as a group of people with related interests. For a permaculturalist, it means an association of plants with complimentary needs. A fruit tree guild is a mini ecosystem that combines planting a fruit tree with other compatible plants for mutual benefit. Those benefits might include providing nutrients, repelling pests, attracting beneficial insects, creating shade or suppressing weeds and generally fostering beneficial conditions for mutual growth and sustained food production.
The use of guilds came about by observing how certain plants would naturally group themselves together in an unmanaged setting and are generally more resilient, vigorous and self sustaining. Guilds also create beauty and balance into their landscaping.
